Why do we love exercise?
Exercise is the best mood enhancer, fights depression, aids weight loss and enhances sleep. It’s good for our muscles and bones, builds our immune system and brain health and gets the blood flowing to all parts of the body. This all helps reduce our risks for chronic disease and injury.
For exercise and movement to be effective, we need to incorporate all the pieces in
The Triangle of Exercise:
Cardio which gets our heart pumping, like swimming or brisk walking
Strength or resistance training which builds our muscles and increases our bone density, using weights and resistance bands
Flexibility which includes stretching and balance work, like yoga or tai chi
Each of the components of the exercise triangle has its unique benefits, and the three work together to keep us healthy and fit. We'll get into more details of each in later posts, IYH.
In the meantime, find the activities in each category that speak to you. What you enjoy doing tends to be something you continue. Grab a friend or go solo, just get moving....
One caveat! Keep in mind that you can’t outrun your mouth. It won’t work to reward yourself with a sugary iced Frappuccino and a muffin after the gym. :)
If you already feel "stretched" in every direction (pun intended), and don't know how you will find the time to fit in a new exercise routine, I get it. That is why in my individual and group coaching programs, we go over how to make this fit into your personal lifestyle in a way that is practical, sustainable, and even more importantly, enjoyable, so that it becomes a part of your life.
“Motivation is what gets you to begin, habit is what keeps you in!”
