Caught You!

While shopping at our local Trader Joe's the other day, I was so excited to see this instant oatmeal, thinking I could send to my son who dorms in yeshiva. I quickly turned the box around (as I always do when I see a new product), expecting it to tell me how healthy this was going to be for him.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the nutrition label. 11 grams of sugar (10 added!) for 40 grams of oatmeal (about a 1/2 cup)! That means that at least 1/4 of his bowl would be sugar! And I didn't see any mention of "sweetened" anywhere on the front of the package. This just goes to show how careful we have to be when buying things. ALWAYS look at the ingredients!

I then noticed Trader Joe's Unsweetened Instant Oatmeal. No surprises here, BH!

This instant oatmeal contains the following ingredients: Whole grain oats, ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, quinoa, and amaranth, with zero added sugars. That's it!

So now the choice is yours with what to add to it. My favorite is always a sprinkle of cinnamon and a splash of vanilla unsweetened almond milk. You might want to try some blueberries, a banana, some chopped walnuts, and/or a T of unsweetened natural peanut butter. Chunky Monkey, anyone? My good friend adds a baked apple to her oatmeal. Now that sounds YUM!

And the best part about this instant oatmeal is the VARIETY of gluten free grains and seeds it offers. It's not just the standard oats we tend to lean towards. Getting different kinds of plants into our diet is the best way to ensure we’re getting the full spectrum of nutrients straight from nature’s pantry! Great for a quick breakfast or to keep in your desk at work or school like my son does.
